The next best thing to Santa Claus comin’ to town is RAW. The national arts organization is setting up shop in Pittsburgh and is spearheaded by one of our very own Nakturnal ladies, with the help of Ryah Issa- Production Assistant, Kyle Anthony Adams- Videography/ Artist Coordinator, and Tom Brown- Installation. Their mission is simple: “to provide independent artists within the first 10 years of their career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity”. RAW Pittsburgh will be showcasing 20-30 emerging artists from the region each month. Mediums include independent film, fashion, music, visual art, performing art, hairstylists, makeup artists and more. RAW currently operates in 54 cities across the United States and Australia. Although it’s organized on a national level, each city’s curator handpicks the talent for every showcase, ensuring a hyper-local experience for all attendees. Every month’s event is organized around an assigned theme, but the rest is up to the vision of the person planning the event. We can’t help but be a little biased when it comes to how much faith we’re putting into the person in charge of Pittsburgh’s RAW events!
For formality’s sake, take a peep at RAW’s official video to find out more about the organization.
Neat, huh? Tomorrow, Thursday, February 7th marks the first ever RAW event in Pittsburgh. It takes place at Cavo in the Strip District, a relatively new club that is gorgeous on the inside and is sure to set the tone for an amazing night. If variety is your thing, you’ll be happy to know that there won’t be a dull moment all evening. Hosted by Knowledge Build and Kellee Maize, the night includes musical performances, a fashion show, a film screening and DJ sets between acts from Mad Tom Brown. Times are as follows:
8-8:30 DJ Mad Tom Brown
8:30-8:40 Film Screening by Brian Cottington
8:45-9:30 Live performance by Morgantics
9:45-10:15 Live performance by Chrome Baby Jesus
10:20-10:25 Live performance by The Dahlia
10:30 Streetheart fashion show
10:45 Elaine Healy fashion show
11 DJ Mad Tom Brown
In addition to all this awesomeness, there will be tons of art on site. TONS! If you’re in the market for some fresh pieces for your walls, or want to support your local arts community, RAW is a great way to do so. Tickets for this event are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, but each participating artist sells tickets for $10 a pop in advance, and this is the preferred way to get tickets because each artist will be selling them. If you do the math, 20-30 artists selling mad tickets equals awesome attendance and that equals great exposure for all the talent this city has to offer. WIN – WIN.
Do something different with your Thursday night and hit up RAW. For a full lineup of the premiere event including more details and participating artists, visit our event page.
