Pittsburgh’s beloved drag superstar Sharon Needles is set to drop her debut album this Tuesday, January 29. Her career exploded after winning RuPaul’s Drag Race and now she’s set to take it to the next level with the release of her album, first music video, and corresponding documentary and limited edition book. Her press release reads: “Sharon Needles conjures up a vision of ghoulish ecstasy in a crypt, with red lacquered fingernails clawing at a stone entombment. Her onstage entry, usually in a casket, elicits chills and laughter. Behind this macabre persona is a genius entertainer who spent over fifteen years honing skills that built the foundation for a career.” Much more than your average drag queen, Needles is shockingly entertaining and not afraid to offend. We’re sure some secrets will be revealed and new questions posed with the debut of all this new material.
PG-13 consists of 12 tracks written entirely by Sharon. “This album has been titled PG-13 because like this vapid industry, life succeeds only in compromise,” she said. “In order for this world to work with me, you must meet me halfway.” The album features contributions from the likes of RuPaul, Amanda Lepore, Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters, and punk rock legend Jayne County, all of whom provided inspiration along the way.
The first single from the album, “This Club is a Haunted House”, will have a sneak preview on Monday, January 28 at 6 and 12PM for the premiere of the fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. A trailer can be found on Sharon’s website. On the single, Sharon states, “Those like me who have been judged during the day, tend to be rulers of the night. We don’t want a white house, we want a dark club.” “If we can’t be loved, then let’s be feared. This club is a haunted house.”
Corresponding documentary, Sharon Needles: Parental Guidance Suggested is an in-depth look into the making of her first music video and features interviews with Needles, stylist Geoffrey Mac, director M. Sharkey and impressions from the visionary’s devoted fans. This Book Is A Haunted House will also be released in conjunction with the documentary to provide another “candid glimpse” into the video’s production, featuring stills, backstage photos and portraits. According to the press release, “this will be a limited edition, perfect-bound companion piece with handwritten notes, messages, and scribbles by Sharon Needles.” It will be available mid-February and can be pre-ordered on Sharon’s online store, Tacky Overpriced Crap.
