If you haven’t heard of this broad before, get with the program folks. Shara Worden aka My Brightest Diamond reminds me a lot of St. Vincent, but having seen both perform live – Shara takes the cake in terms of talent. Broad can sing!
I had the pleasure of seeing her perform last night at Shadow Lounge as part of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater‘s Sunstar Women in Music Festival. I don’t know much about this festival, but I know I’m grateful they know what’s up and booked MBD. Good move. I really didn’t think anyone knew about the event because I hadn’t seen much about it online or elsewhere, but shit hit the fan when I showed up and couldn’t get in.
Good thang we stuck around. I was half tempted to cut my losses, round up the troops and head to lazercrunk, which would have been SUCH a mistake. This was one of the rare shows that I didn’t want to end. I could have sat through a 4-hour performance. Upon hearing the first few songs, you could tell everyone in the room was completely floored. Chills would be an understatement – my entire body was buzzing watching Shara perform. My friends and I kept looking at each other periodically, jaws dropped. She was that good.
Quite possibly one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard, Shara began her musical career studying opera. Makes sense – she had impeccable control of those cords. Every note was on pitch and she sang each one flawlessly. I’ve never seen someone take their formal training and translate it in a way that Shara has chosen to express herself. It was certainly a show I will regard as one of the most memorable I’ve ever seen – and I’ve seen more shows than dumps you’ve taken this year, trust. I can’t say much more about it other than you should have been there. Anyone who is a serious fan of music should have been there. This is a talent that deserves much more attention than she’s getting.
I can’t say enough glowing things about her, so rather than reading my ramblings, I suggest you check her out. Pitchfork just posted a collab she did with Prefuse 73. If that doesn’t tickle your pickle, hit up her myspace. I haven’t found any videos of her live performances that even touch what it’s like to see her in the flesh, so don’t bother teasing yourself. If you get a chance to see her live, it’s a must.
